As The Word Turns. Thoughts on the week of November 16-20. It was a consistent week. Even though the manic pace of the plots can be a bit overwhelming, there was a successful balance of moods that kept things from falling apart. Mysterious Mick. Mick was back to make his pitch for Barbara. We still don't know anything about him, but he certainly ratcheted up the creepy factor pretty quick. He made a pass at Babs, which may have just been salesmanship, but it got her back up. He also made a pass at Ali. Adding to the charm was the fact that his face was caked in blood at the time. Mick seems prone to nose bleeds, in spite of running around with a miracle cure-all, and refuses to see a doctor about them, which suggests that he could have some kind of neurological problem. He does have enough brains to scowl derisively at Casey though. Mad Meg. Meg was in the closet to witness Lily asking Damian to move in with her and play house. Meg's face as she listened to them was utterly hilarious. It was actually a completely fascinating scene that played like a blackly humorous bedroom farce. Even the background music referenced the sex comedies of the 40s and the theme of "Basic Instinct." Watching her make Damian squirm at the hospital was also a delight. Even if Meg is acting desperate, it's a vengeful, in control, kind of desperation, and that's a lot more attractive than what she's been up to lately. All the same, why Meg is like this is kind of bewildering. I know that Meg was never the most stable of people, but it really wasn't until Paul lost his personality and then it spontaneously came back reformed that she fell so much for Damian. Previous to that, she was far more reluctant, she was more obsessed with Eliza, and he was doing all of the chasing. I'm really curious to see if this snap ever gets explained. The Nuke explosion. After a tiff, fireworks went off in Noah's face and the filmmaker was blinded. He was angry at Luke for his role in getting Mason dismissed and messing up his project. To make amends, Damian decided he should adopt him so they can make his medical decisions. The irony is being lathered on so thick in this storyline that it's almost impossible not to think of it as a comedy, even if an unintentional one. I always feel bad talking about Nuke plots. I want to like them, but things always go wrong. Now, of course, Mason was a bit sleazy, but I could forgive that easily if it made this story interesting. Unfortunately, it was blown too quickly. Why couldn't Noah have actually had an affair, or at least been tempted? Isn't he human? The only time he was ever an interesting character was when he was sleeping with Maddie and longing for Luke. They could have played on that so easily. Instead, they're playing on another part of the Nuke mythos – the nursing back to health of the wounded lover who wants to be alone. Why is nursing people back to health so often relied upon as a source of sexual/romantic stimulus? I have a pretty good idea of what a shrink would say about it, but I shouldn't go there. Complicating things a little more, Noah is now part of the most rapid adoption case in history. Could Noah being adopted into the Grimaldi clan actually save him from being so deathly dull? Being a Grimaldi has always saved Luke from the blandness of the Snyder family, so maybe there is still hope for him. The Ghost theme continued. Henry was called to testify and one of Manzo's goons tried to stop him. The ghost of Brad scared him off and brought Henry to Katie to try and help her out. Watching Henry and Brad sing to the baby was cute. The cheesy synth music in the scene with the psychic was also a nice touch, but I'm still not quite sold on this story. It's getting better though. Margo chatting with Katie certainly helped flesh it out a little more. One of highlights of the week was, however, Dusty, who managed to be rather adorable in his own way as he reached out to help Teri with the Manzo mess. There are hints that he will be getting involved in a triangle of sorts with the Ciccone sister and they seem to be laying the groundwork for it.

B&B Breakdown for the week of November 16! While other things happened, the biggest events this week were Ann returning and Sandy and Whip's connection. Sandy I'm very intrigued by this character, especially since I don't know where this story is going. I like that so far it's not cliché, where Sandy is obsessed with Nick and wants Bridget out of the picture. After pulling her hand away from his and asking him to stand behind the curtain while she was implanted, it seems Sandy doesn’t want anything to do with Nick. It was interesting that she basically clung to Bridget during the procedure. We also found out she and Whip are cousins, but she doesn’t want anyone to know. I have to say I'm a little disappointed they are related, as I was hoping for a romantic pairing between the two. I enjoyed the actors' chemistry, as twisted as it was, on General Hospital and was hoping to have it explored further on B&B. Oh well, I can't have everything. One more point I'd like to make about Sandy is how great I think Sarah Brown is doing in the role. She was still playing Claudia on General Hospital when she started playing Sandy and the characters aired just one day apart from each other, but she managed to portray a completely different person in Sandy, with absolutely no trace of Claudia. Creating such different characters is tough enough for some actors, let alone when they overlap like that. Kudos!

Restless Rant Week of November 16 - 20: It's been a relatively low-key week on The Young and the Restless, but definitely a solid one. For those of us who don't watch the show for one particular character or couple, it's been enjoyable to have the canvas shared by a wide variety of characters and storylines. The type of stories being told are much to my preference, although some seem to be finding it dull after the very dramatic and dark stories being told a month or two ago. I'll take love, family, and business tales any day, although I think the recent business-related scenes have been a huge snore - and probably the biggest reason the show has seemed boring at times - the writers need to step it up in the boardroom! Let's take a look at the week: Daniel and Amber Wedding: As with most Y&R gatherings, I loved the interaction between characters, the one-liners, and the random weirdness - Murphy and the square dancing, and Lauren being gifted with a rat! The reactions of Lauren and Michael were great, as was that of Jana, local predictor of doom - too funny! The romantic scenes this week between Daniel and Amber were good - and their makeshift honeymoon in the apartment was quirky - just like them. The Rat: Obviously Ryder's mother, or whoever is pulling the strings, was behind the rat incident. There were good scenes with the tension surrounding Michael/Lauren/Ryder, but Kevin is on my last nerve blindly defending Ryder at every turn - real people have an ability to see both sides of an issue! I can't help but wish that they'd hurry things along though - it's difficult to engage with a story when you don't know all the players and their motivations! Billy/Mac Split: This is really giving fuel to Billy's 'life struggle' storyline, as well as adding an extra element of interest to the Lily/Cane story. I wonder if Mac is really doing the surrogacy for the reasons she claims, or if she sub-consciously wanted to force the issue of her and Billy's differences. Where it falls flat for me is in trying to feel anything during the scenes where Billy is pining for Mac and their past together - I never felt any chemistry, nor any interest in this couple, so his onscreen angst over the break-up isn't making me feel a thing, when it should be. Cane/Lily: I totally understand why no one wants to rain on Lily's parade as far as having a baby right away is concerned (as Chance stated, it's life-affirming), but I think it should give her pause that she's planning for the possibility of her own death at the same time! Also, what if Mac doesn't conceive after Lily's got her hopes up? It seems like Lily is becoming a little obsessive about this, and that's never, ever good… Mac/Lily: The cure for insomnia. Billy/Cane: I enjoyed their little adversarial scene outside the Chancellor Estate this week. It really reminded me how dynamic the character of Cane can be when he steps outside of his romance. Chance/Chloe: I'm definitely a fan of their romance at this point - although I do feel that Billy and Chloe are the money couple in the long run. Chance is strong and safe. Who didn't want to climb into that bed beside him and curl up in his arms this week? By the way, how funny was Chance propped up in bed doing quizzes in the fashion magazines with Chloe - love those 'extras' they put into the scenes! Knowing that Chloe will never feel the same passion for Chance that she does for Billy keeps me guarded from investing too heavily in this couple though. What I am invested in is this triangle - the actors become their characters onscreen and there is chemistry all around.

These are the "DAYS" of my week for November 16-20: I have little to say about this week. I found it amusing and exciting. Very sweeps-worthy! Here’s a lowdown on what stood out for me the most… Baby Baby, Who's Got The Baby? First of all, it's ironic that EJ was part of a baby switch when he was born and now his daughter was one. Killer! Kate was incredibly amusing this week. Her lines were amusing and so was the way Lauren got them across. Lauren and James Scott have incredible chemistry and I’m looking forward to seeing more scenes between the two. One thing that I find unusual is that Kate never spends time with or even mentions her granddaughter Allie. Everyone learned about the baby switch this week and Sami slapped around Nicole, making me laugh aloud, nervously while recapping - Sami was frightening! Their scene wasn’t a letdown but powerful. Sami’s rant left nothing out and Nicole sniveled and bawled. I felt for them both. Thoughts are now turned to custody of Brisbane Sydney. When EJ noticed Sydney was calling for her mum (mum mum mum) I thought of how it’d be a kick to hire Nicole as the nanny! EJ learned Stefano put the hit on Rafe. I think he already figured that out as soon as he spoke with Mateo, otherwise why would he bother to save Rafe? We know he saved him because he and Samanther are back on common ground. It wouldn't do to kill off her beau! EJ confronted Stefano about his part in keeping the baby switch a secret and strangled Stefano for backstabbing him. It's the least he could have done, and was highly entertaining! Stefano fumbled around, searching for a way out and admitted he didn't want Samanther to get her hooks back into EJ.He's a lot like Kate. Just trying to do right by his kids, but always goes too far! That's why they're brilliant together! I found Rafe and Sami to be very sweet and loving after Sami held Sydney for the first time, knowing that she was her daughter. I really felt the love. I didn’t feel much coming from EJ toward Sydney in the aftermath of finding out she was indeed his daughter, which was surprising, considering he's always so open about his feelings when angry... Some feel the writers set up this whole storyline just to get Ejami back together but those who aren’t wrapped up in coupledom like myself can see that it’s not about that. Though there is a possibility that will occur, there is so much more involved here with Safe as a couple, with Nicole’s obsession with EJ, with EJ coming into his own and so on. Speaking of EJ, why in the hell would the Mayor be at the mansion when the commander, Roman and D.A. Woods went to talk to EJ about the accusation Mateo made? What does the Mayor have to do with this? That made no sense to me! Bail me out? Chloe refused to bail Nicole out of jail. Though she said she had the money, we all know it's Daniel’s money. She hasn’t had a job since the winter, but I digress. Nicole and Chloe’s friendship is over. Once Ari tells Brady the reason why Nicole was really arrested, their friendship will be over as well! Perfect timing for Fay to make her return to Salem, November 30. Mia learned the truth about the baby switch in the classic soap opera way, by overhearing a private conversation. Chloe was leaving a message for Nicole and blurted it out, but when Mia and Maggie confronted her with the information, she did what she always does and stared. I’d have liked to see emotion register on her face. You know, shock, denial, embarrassment and finally sorrow that she blurted this sensitive information out in public when she didn’t mean to. Luckily, Maggie saved the scene and tried to comfort poor Mia, whose head was spinning and who we could see was devastated. She really let Nicole have it in jail and considering Nicole is still in denial about what she has done, and that she’s out on bail, look for her to go after Sydney once more! Strip him of his badge! Bo amuses me but he shouldn’t be a cop! His badge should be stripped. He’s using his status to put a guard outside his door for Carly – the murderer, instead of turning her in. Oy! He hasn’t even seen her for sixteen years, yet he trusts her implicitly! Not to mention that when Abe did Bo’s job, he was uber busy and had no time for extra-curricular activities, and actually cared about the law, yet Bo has all the time in the world to follow Carly the murderer around Salem. He might want to try harder to see Ciara and to save his marriage rather than harbouring a criminal. Things might just get a little tougher now that Adrienne asked Justin for a divorce. How many saw that coming?! The scene of the week wasn’t the baby switch storyline. It was Carly and Vivi’s scene at Bo’s place. Even though I still cannot believe Carly would even be in the same room as the woman who once tried to bury her alive without trying to kill her, it was still a great scene. Carly says to Vivi, "You have to remember, I’m in mourning. My heart is now like a block of ice." Vivi’s comeback, "Oh, I’m sure Bo has a blow torch around here somewhere…" When Bo arrived to the house and asked how Vivi got in, she replied, "I’ve always been able to open doors with my smile, Bo." Just classic DOOL. Love it and I am thankful to the show for bringing back Vivian and Carly and for doing such a great job, overall. It makes this part of my job much easier to do!
